Sukkot: The Festival which is celebrated beginning the 15th of the month of Tishrei. We leave our homes and make our dwelling in a Sukkah (booth). We remain there over the course of seven days. During this time, we remember the protection God gave to the Jewish people during their forty year journey through the desert on the way to Israel.

The torah also commands us to take four species. A lulav, three hadasim, two aravot and an etrog. The mitzvah of taking the four species is for all seven days of Sukkot. One recites two blessings the first day: "all netilat lulav" and "shehecheeyanu". We recite only one blessing-"al netilat lulav"-for the remaining six days.

According to Torah law, the lulav is taken for all seven days only in the Holy Temple in Jerusalem when it was standing, and outside the Temple, only on the first day of Sukkot. However, our sages instituted, taking the four species for all seven days even post-Temple, as a remembrance of Temple Times.

The four species all taken together make up one single mitzvah. If any of the species are missing or do not meet specific requirements then the mitzvah has not been fulfilled at all!

The lulav, hadasim and aravot are bound together by a part of the species itself.

The Rabbis also enacted a decree that the four species are not taken on Shabbat even when it falls on the first day of Sukkot.

On the first day of Sukkot, a person must be careful to own the lulav and etrog he is performing the mitzvah with. On the the other six days, ownership is not strictly required. A stolen lulav or lulav purchased with stolen money is never permitted!
